San Antonio Spring Break Staycation Ideas

Spring Break Staycation

When I was a kid I used to look forward to Spring Break as soon as Winter Break was over! What kids doesn’t love a week off from school with nothing to do? As a parent however, I don’t get overly excited about the prospect of a week of non-stop video games and Netflix marathons, which is what you’ll end up with if you don’t have a plan.

A couple of years ago we decided to travel to Orlando to spend Spring Break at Disney World. After almost twenty hours in the car we were met with the most insane crowds I’ve ever seen at the parks (I used to work at Disney, so I’ve seen the parks at all stages of busy). I pretty much promised myself (and my husband) that we would never do a theme park during peak season again!

Spring Break Staycation

So, what can you do that is less insane than a theme park, but a little more exciting than spending every day in front of some sort of screen? Here are my top ideas for creating a memorable Spring Break that the whole family can enjoy:

  1. Chuck E Cheese: Don’t click away just yet … hear me out! I’m not a fan of the crowds or the germs, but Chuck E. Cheese at 9:00am is pretty much perfect. You can usually get a solid 45 minutes before anyone else even shows up. The restaurant is clean, and it’s too early for pizza! My kids love having the entire place to themselves, and an hour is usually more than enough to use all our tokens and still be in a good mood!
  2. The Zoo: San Antonio has an amazing zoo, and it’s an affordable field trip for the entire family. The key to a great visit is to get an early start. If you get to the zoo when it opens you beat the crowds and you can get a great parking spot! Another bonus, the animals are usually more active at the beginning of the day before it gets hot.
  3. Movie Matinée: Although a trip to the movies can be a little pricier than the previous options, if you go to the first show of the day you can get a price break and avoid the crowds (are you sensing a theme here?!).
  4. Make a Scrapbook: Kids love to know all about themselves, and they love to hear stories from their parents. Gathering old pictures and writing down memories are great ways for your kids learn how much they mean to you. A quick trip to the craft store can get you an album, and you probably have everything else you need already at home!

What are your plans for Spring Break this year?

      • Totally agree. My daughter loves chuck e cheese and I bet stand it. The only reason I ever take her is for birthday parties. Well my husband and I took her early morning it was so calm, us plus another family. She is a small two year old it was nice to not worry about her getting trampled. we will never go in the evening again.
