Between cub scouts, piano lessons, after school activities and sports, I feel like my kids are always on the go, and always learning new things. We actually gave up sports for a season because I felt like we were spending too much time on the field! I’m sure most moms place a high priority on making sure their kids are have new and memorable experiences, but are we doing the same for ourselves?
Learning doesn’t stop just because we’re finished with school. There are opportunities all over the place to develop new hobbies and talents. Is there something you’ve always wanted to try, but just didn’t know where to begin? Google is your friend! Look it up!
Learning to make sausage at Central Market
There are classes offered all over the city; I’ve taken many classes at the Central Market Cooking School. Central Market offers one time classes with chefs and authors. You can check out their monthly calendar here. If you want to go more in-depth, you can check out the week-end classes offered by the Culinary Institute of America. If cooking isn’t your thing but you’ve always wanted to try your hand at jewelry making, then you can look at the courses offered by the Inspire Fine Arts Center (One year I gave my husband a welding class from here for Father’s Day!). The school district also offers a variety of continuing education classes … everything from computers to languages.

If you don’t think you have the time to be out of the house once a week, there are plenty of online classes as well. I took my first photography class online, and since then I’ve taken a lot of other classes in the virtual world. I love that with online learning I can go at my own pace. If you’re in the mood for something even more relaxed, check out Amanda’s post on Project Life from last week. Scrapbooking is a great hobby to share with your entire family. You can always search through ideas on Pinterest where there’s a tutorial on pretty much any hobby you’ve ever thought of… Flower Arranging, macaroon making, calligraphy… it’s all there!
Moms are often guilty of neglecting themselves in order to take care of all the needs of their families. I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be one thing or the other. You’re not a bad mom if you want to join the library book club (yup, that’s a thing!). In fact, I think I’m actually doing my family a service by letting them know that my life doesn’t stop when my children aren’t in the room! Hopefully my kids will see that there are always opportunities for learning, and that learning doesn’t end!
