San Antonio Food Truck Parks

One of my favorite things about summer is the way time just seems to slip away; before you know it that a afternoon melts into a lazy night.  Summers are for patios, live music, indulgent food, cold drinks, and great friends.  I’ve recently discovered some local gems that are the perfect place to laugh the night away: food truck parks.

Food trucks have been around for years but they’re no longer just for late night bar crawlers.  Food truck parks offer a variety of unique culinary treats by bringing several different food trucks together in one location.  And we’re not talking about your typical taco or burger and fries.  You’ll be surprised by the diversity of food choices, from smoky Texas BBQ to spicy Cajun shrimp to the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich.  Hubby and I usually pick a few different things that look good and then share them so we’re able to eat really well without spending a lot.  The best part: you don’t need a babysitter to enjoy a food truck park!  The ones we like to go to have plenty of space to run around and/or a playground, so while you’re enjoying a night with your friends the kids won’t be bugging you that it’s time to go.  Not that our five month old needs a playground right now, but I like knowing that if she cries it’s not going to bother anyone because it’s already loud and busy.

There are several food truck parks in San Antonio, but my two favorites are The Block (located just off-campus at UTSA) and The Point (in Leon Springs).  The Block is newer and has more open space, but both have good restrooms, a bar, live music some nights, and plenty of shaded seating.  The Block has fun games to keep both kids and adults entertained, and The Point has a large playground area.

Other food truck parks you may be interested in:

Boardwalk on Bulverde (re-opened after renovations on May 23, 2014)
Alamo Street Eat Bar
StrEAT Food on Broadway (Wednesdays only, 4 p.m.-2 a.m.)
The Pavilion (Boerne)
Main Plaza Downtown (Mondays and Thursdays at lunch)

Food truck lineups change every night; the best way to see what’s on the menu is to check out the facebook page for that park.  If you find a food truck that you really like, you can also follow them on facebook or twitter to see where they’ll be on a given day.  Some parks are BYOB at certain times, so be sure to check the details before you head out.  A really fantastic resource for all things food truck is SA Food Truck Finder.  Here you can get information such as hours, locations, and menus for parks around your area or look up a specific food truck to see what they offer and where you can find them.

Food truck parks are a great way to spend a long summer evening with new foods and old friends.  Greek gyro with a side of eggrolls and fried apple pie for dessert?  Yes, please!

  1. Not exactly a food truck but we’ve got a truck for catering. Just wanted to contribute to your foodie (or should I say breadie) new finds. This is a very interesting bakery with a PanAmericano twist. All the bread is 48-Hour Long Cultured, no additives, no artificial yeast and tipping the scale of deliciousness. You can find it at 8305 Broadway every day or on Sundays at The Quarry Farmers Market.

Maybe a Bread discovery article would be interesting… “Searching for 2000 year old bread”.

Or discovering the Tequila Almond Croissant.

  2. Aren’t food trucks awesome?! I always thought they were just the sketchy ones on the side of the road but you can get some stellar food from a good food truck!

  3. I had no idea San Antonio had so many! I’ve been to the Boardwalk one and I want to try the Alamo Street one but it looks like my list got a little longer 🙂 I love good trucks!
