The Best Pumpkin Patches in San Antonio

Don’t miss our list of San Antonio Pumpkin Patches for 2015 – click here!

It may not always feel like autumn in South Texas, so it’s up to us to bring on some Halloween and fall colors by heading to one of many pumpkin patches in the San Antonio area. Grab a hay ride, a pumpkin-spiced latte, or pop a pumpkin hat on your favorite baby and post those pictures!

So where, exactly, are these proliferate pumpkin patches, you ask? Well, it just so happens, we’re going tell you about some of them. San Antonio is home to multiple pumpkin locales – from pick your own, to choosing picked pumpkins to a hayride complete with attacking zombies. From local churches (pumpkins are a great fundraiser) to large orchards. From University Methodist to Hondo, Devine and Medina. There’s pumpkin painting for little ones, petting zoos, apple cider, and so much more!

Local pumpkin patches provide the perfect backdrop for beautiful fall family photos – with or without Halloween costumes. These are almost always inexpensive to visit (many have no admission fees) and most have activities for all ages. There’s no way we could list all of them, but here are some to get you started.  If you’ve got a favorite spot we missed, please tell us about it in the comments!

Now that you’ve got that pumpkin (or two or three), how about some tips to keep it fresh and looking good through Halloween?

First, wipe that pumpkin down, removing all the dirt.  Go ahead and carve Jack or Jill-o-Lantern.

Next, make a mixture of bleach and water in a spray bottle (1 T bleach to 1 quart of water).  Spray that mixture inside and out of the pumpkin to kill surface bacteria and prevent ugly molding (or as we call it the “zombie 5 o’clock shadow”). Let it sit for about 20 minutes.

Now for some petroleum jelly and rub on all cut surfaces of the pumpkin. This makes a seal to keep out yucky bacteria and molds. (It also keeps it from drying out too quickly.) You can wipe away the extra with a paper towel.

Lastly, try to keep J. O’Lantern out of direct sunlight and in a cool place.

Denise came to SA 21 years ago via Southern Illinois, NYC and Philadelphia. A wife for 25+ years, she’s mom to nursing student, Sis (23); college student, Felicia (20); and 11 yr. old homeschooled Batman. An attachment parenting family, they’ve homeschooled for 13 years. Her MS in education and BS in journalism haven’t really helped with homeschooling. (Except for diagraming sentences. Which is kinda like algebra. Addictive and useless.) A renaissance woman (sounds better than “Jill of all trades mistress* of none,”) she’s been an AIDS/sexuality educator/counselor; doula; lactation consultant; childbirth educator; photographer and writer. She’d like to be more things when she grows up, including children’s author and organized. Living on a work in progress in Helotes, they’re home to horses, rescued/foster dogs, a hedgehog, turtles, bearded dragon, corn snake, and, of course, Red, the neighbor’s longhorn. Life is like a warped Disney movie with a bad episode of tripawd hoarders waiting to happen. The home may be chaotic, funny, and loud -- but, there’s always room for one more. *mistress – 1) as in the feminine form of “master.” 2) not the other one

  1. For Pick your own pumpkins, try calling Vogel Orchard. They don’t seem to have a website, but it looks like they may have pick your own pumpkins. It would be a bit of a drive, but a beautiful drive in the fall weather with an escape to the hill country – tire those little ones out and nap on the way home. Vogel Orchard is about 10.6 miles east of Fredericksburg city limits; 12862 Hwy 290 East; Fredericksburg 78624. (830) 644-2404. If you go, let us know stop back by our page and report in! Happy pumpkin picking!

  2. Where are the pick your own? Didn’t see any of those listed? We are military and my daughter loves pick your own but we haven’t been able to find one.

    • Christine – are you wanting pumpkins that are grown on a vine and then you can pick them? As far as we have researched, we haven’t found pick your own in this area of Texas. If any readers have, we’d love to hear about it!
