Finding Great San Antonio Donuts

Finding Donuts

If you’ve been distracted by our recent breakfast taco rivalry (and truce) with Austin, you might have missed something really important: Donuts are having a moment right now. (Need more proof? Check out the winter cover of San Antonio Current‘s Flavor Issue.)

Who doesn’t love a good donut? Even fitness fanatics find donuts to be one of their favorite “cheats.” When I first moved here, everyone I knew was ooohing and ahhing over pictures of babies and weddings that were popping on their Facebook feeds. Meanwhile, I was secretly pining for my East Coast friends’ Sugar Shack donuts and West Coast’s Voodoo Doughnut, so I started my quest for a Texan equivalent. Initially, I was disappointed with San Antonio’s donut variety. We’re known for our culinary diversity, so why couldn’t I find an outrageous donut around here?

With some research, I found that San Antonio is having a donut revolution, I just needed to know where to look. And much like our great coffee boom of 2015, the donut scene is exploding!

Donuts have recently been added to The Bread Box’s repertoire and from the looks of it, they’re knocking it out of the park! (Not to mention everything is baked on-site, from scratch, with locally sourced ingredients.) Stalk their instagram to keep tabs on their newest flavors.

The Ginger Snap

Featured in the March issue of San Antonio Magazine as a “social media guru,” Halee Edwards has more than 70,000 Instagram followers, and it’s easy to see why. She’s concocted everything from Sopapilla to Mangonada donuts. If that doesn’t say “puro San Antonio” to you, I don’t know what will. Right now, you can find her baked goods at rooftop coffee and cocktail bar, Paramour, and the popular Press Coffee. Check out her website for ordering details (24 hours in advance for donuts) and steal some of her recipes!

The Original Donut Shop

3307 Fredericksburg Rd., San Antonio, TX 78201 | (210) 734-5661

The Original Donut Shop is a San Antonio favorite. I had my first Fruity Pebble donut here, and it was perfection. The donut was light and airy, not greasy, and the cereal was fresh and crunchy. Not only can you get donuts, but breakfast tacos too; and they have a drive thru line for both.

March 6th was the start of a four week hip-hop themed donut series, to include an “underground” donut flavor. Keep an eye out for this one. I can’t imagine that these creations will stop after four weeks.
