As seasons change and spring turns to summer, one of the things that often gets left off of our to-do lists is seasonal cleaning. So exactly what, you ask, should you be doing to get your home ready for the onset up sum-sum-summertime? Our friends at Blackmon Mooring have all of the tips you need, along with great ideas for summer activities, entertaining, crafts, summer safety, and more in Home is the Heart of Summer: A How To Guide for Soaking Up the Summer!

Window Cleaning

Summertime means a bright sun shining through your windows…showing off all of those tiny fingerprints, dog nose prints, and dirt that might be hiding on your glass. Pay close attention to all of the windows in your house and give them a good once-over with a glass cleaner and soft cloth.

Clean Door and Window Tracks

With kids in and out of the house and windows open to let the summer air in, you’ll need to clean away the gunk that’s collected in their tracks since their last cleaning. Take a sponge dipped in warm, soapy water and clear the tracks out. If the dirt and gunk is gone but the doors and windows are still sticking, apply a little WD-40 to the tracks to keep doors and windows running smoothly.

Wash Your Home’s Exterior

Outdoor entertaining is quintessential to the summer experience: barbecues, family gatherings, playing games, or soaking up the sun. Just as you clean the inside of your home when having guest over, you should also clean the outside of your home. You’ll want to clean the deck, driveway, and siding of your home. Clean these areas by renting a pressure washer or hire a professional to do the work for you. Remember that cleaning siding should be done with caution or you may do more harm than good.WashtheHomeExterior

Clean Out Your Pantry

No one wants a visit from bugs in their pantry! Prepping for summer should involve a thorough investigation of your packaged items to ensure everything is sealed properly. Check the expiration dates and be sure to dispose of anything that’s expired. And consider donating any items you no longer need to a food pantry. We recommend the San Antonio Food Bank.

Summer Cleaning Short Cuts

Left Over Lemon

Use lemon to clean stainless steel fixtures and faucets. Take a leftover half of a lemon and rub it over the areas you want to clean. When you are finished, wipe the areas down with a microfiber cloth.

Get the Grime Off Your Grill

When your grill is still warm, take a wire brush and scrub down the grates. If you have major build-up on your grill, take off the grate and use an oven cleaner in a well-ventilated area.Get grime off your grill

Got Water Rings?

Ugh, that moment when someone leaves a glass on your wood table, leaving you with water rings. Try this easy solution! Apply full-fat mayonnaise to the affected area and let it sit for one hour. Once finished, simply wipe it off gently with a cloth.

Fight Sticky Fingers

Do you see little handprints all over your kitchen appliances? Use a citrus-based furniture polish on the fridge. The slightly oily surface will help repel future marks.
