10 April Fools’ Day Tricks for Kids

April Fools’ Day is just around the corner! I love a holiday that encourages creativity, laughter, and practical jokes. We put out a call for ideas for pranks to play on your kids on the ACMB Community and Conversation Facebook Page, and I was delighted to find that our ACMB community is full of creative pranksters!

Here are 10 ideas of April Fools’ Day pranks you can play on your kids:

 1. Add googly eyes to everyday things!

Community member Nicole will be spending the evening of March 31st affixing a multitude of googly eyes onto the food in her refrigerator.

2. Freeze your child’s toothbrush.

This prank is both harmless AND allows you to check if your kid actually brushes his/her teeth. Freeze toothbrushes in small cups of water or an ice cube tray and then put the toothbrush popsicle out by the sink in the morning. Thanks to Christie for this idea!

3. “Cook” up some “brownies” for breakfast.

Experience a few moments of being the fun mom when you announce to your kids that you’ve made brownies for breakfast! Then experience being the corny mom when your kids realize you’ve made “E’s” out of brown paper. Taylor and Denisse both recommend this joke.

4. Swap out Jell-o for juice.

Create an undrinkable drink by filling juice cups about 3/4 full with red or orange Jell-o and a straw the night before. In the morning tell your kids their juice is in the fridge and hold back the giggles as they can’t get their straws to work. ACMB C&C member Ambia recommends having spoons handy!

5. Make “cookies” out of mashed potatoes and black beans.

For an after-dinner April Fools’ trick, serve your family “cookies” made of mashed potatoes and black beans. Community member Nicole is following this recipe to make these prank treats this year.

6. Tape the faucet.

This is a great one for this year since April 1st happens to fall on a Saturday (and not a school morning). Place clear tape over the faucet so that when your kid turns on the water he/she will get a wet surprise. The trick’s on you, however, when you get to clean off a wet counter.

7. Trick out treats.

Swap out candy for healthier options. Tootsie Roll or Double Bubble candy wrappers fit nicely around baby carrots or cut string cheese. Community member Ambia wrapped grapes in mini-Easter Egg candy wrappers.

8. Serve pizza for dessert.

You can serve traditional pizza for dinner and then another “pizza” for dessert! This recipe and tutorial on bettycrocker.com would make for a memorable dessert!

9. Short sheet their beds.

End out your kids’ day with a bed that’s impossible to enter. Community member Shanti recommends tricking kids with this classic prank. Short sheeter novice? Here are some instructions

10. Toilet paper their shoes.

Before they wake, stuff toilet paper in the toes of your kids’ shoes. Tell your kids their feet look bigger and hold back the smiles when they try to put on their shoes with their “suddenly bigger” feet.
