3 Non-surgical Treatments Only a Doctor Should Perform {Sponsored}

Non-surgical cosmetic treatments have exploded in popularity over the past several years, and for good reason. While many people fantasize about plastic surgery procedures like eyelid surgery or a facelift, the fact is surgery isn’t feasible for a lot of people. Either they can’t afford it, they don’t have time, or they just don’t like the idea of going under the knife. Non-surgical treatments offer a very appealing alternative: visible results without any of the drawbacks of surgery.

Of course, non-surgical treatments can’t compete with plastic surgery on the playing field of dramatic transformations. But things like whiter teeth, smoother skin, and fuller lips and cheeks are all achievable without surgery. That adds up to quite a few years you can take off your appearance with a quick appointment and a few hundred (not thousand) dollars out of your pocket. Considering the value our society places on looking young and beautiful, it’s no surprise that these treatments are selling like hotcakes.

While a salon or day spa may be okay for things like facials, waxing, and even some laser treatments, there are a few “medspa” treatments that really should be left to the pros, and by that I mean a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

BOTOX

BOTOX has made its way into our collective vocabulary, as well as into the beauty routines of millions of women and men (thanks, Real Housewives). Many celebrities have even copped to getting “a little BOTOX. According to San Antonio plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Decherd’s website, BOTOX can be used to smooth crow’s feet, horizontal forehead lines, and the vertical frown lines (11s) between the eyebrows. The neurotoxin in BOTOX causes the tiny muscles that create these wrinkles to relax and release them.

Plastic surgeons perform these injections routinely, and they understand the product, the correct usage and concentration, and how to create precisely the look you want without complications. BOTOX injection costs are fairly standard across the board, so there really isn’t a good reason to go to anyone but a real specialist physician.

Injectable Fillers

These are the wonder-products that restore full cheeks, create Angelina Jolie-ish lips, and smooth away tell-tale signs of aging like nasolabial folds and chin wrinkles. Some celebrities admit that their secret to aging beautifully is a combination of fillers, BOTOX, and other skin treatments.

Although there are different formulations of fillers, most are made of malleable, biocompatible substances that remain in place for 6 to 12 months. The gel is injected into deep lines or folds, or areas like the cheeks and lips that may need some plumping.

Most experts agree, great filler results are a product of a skilled injector who understands the products, as well as the art and science of injection, including placement, quantity, and which type of filler to use. Since filler results are visible immediately, and visible to everyone, you should definitely leave this treatment to certified doctors who specialize in non-surgical facial sculpting.

Chemical Peels

It’s sort of a scary name for a potentially very effective procedure. Chemical peels are exactly what they sound like. A chemical substance is applied to the skin, which causes it to peel away, taking brown spots, fine lines, and other blemishes with it. New, healthier skin grows in its place, and the result is a younger-looking, smoother, and more even complexion.

Peels range from superficial to deep, depending on the chemicals used and the concentration of those chemicals. A superficial peel might be OK at a beauty salon or day spa, but moderate to deep ones are definitely best left to the medical pros.

Think of a chemical peel as a controlled injury to your skin, with “control” being key here. An experienced doctor has a thorough understanding of all the different skin types, and will be able to determine which peel and strength is right for your skin. He or she will know precisely how to apply the chemical solution, and how long to leave it on for optimal results.
