The DoSeum Summer Camps: Eight Reasons to Sign Your Kids Up Today!

It’s no secret that the Alamo City Moms Blog team is excited about the fast-approaching opening of The DoSeum, San Antonio’s new children’s museum. We were thrilled when they came to us to help spread the word about all of the exciting offerings that The DoSeum has in store for San Antonio. As we sat down to think about what our partner would want to share with San Antonians and what our readers might want to know more about, one of the most obvious answers was that our new San Antonio landmark will have summer camps for summer 2015!

But much like everything else at the The DoSeum, their summer camp programs are a little different from most. We are so excited about these camps that many of our own team members are enrolling their kids so that they can experience a summer at The DoSeum themselves!

So just what makes The DoSeum Summer Camps so special, you ask? We’re happy to tell you!

1. The DoSeum has six major learning halls in their new facility. Each summer camp has been specifically created to center on one or more of these learning halls so that campers can learn in a hands-on approach, or as the museum name suggests, by “doing.” From STEM to Legos to storytelling, from arts to social studies, kids are brought into a museum environment for summer fun and learning.

2. While the indoor exhibit space is pretty impressive, each camper will have time each day in the outdoor exhibit yards to explore, climb, and run among a tree house, climbing structure, Eco Pond, and other interactive exhibits. If you have driven down Broadway and seen the outdoor yards that The DoSeum now boasts, you know exactly how incredible outdoor time will be. Forget a rinky-dink slide and rundown playscape. The DoSeum’s outdoor space lets imaginations fly!

3. Have you ever placed your kids in a summer camp, only to be met by teenage faces who will be in charge of your child for six hours each day? You can rest assured that’s not the case with The DoSeum Summer Camps. The DoSeum Summer Camps are each staffed with experienced adults, many with degrees and experience in education. You can even see staff bios of the team that will be leading the camps here.

4. Regardless of your children’s interests might be, you can be sure to find a fit for your kids’ tastes at The DoSeum Summer Camps. Do you have a budding thespian in your house? Camps like Special Effects Theatre, Playtropolis, or Character Hats will be a great fit! Do you have a child who loves to build and tinker? One of the Master Lego camps, Engineering Challenge, or Maker Station might be right up his/her alley! Or are there future FBI agents in your midst? Mission Impossible: Agent Training or Spy Academy 101 will help them strengthen their skills. These, plus a variety of other camps, are offered weekly throughout the summer to keep your kids engaged and having fun all summer long!

5. For parents needing longer hours for their kids each day, The DoSeum Summer Camps offer extended hours. Regular hours for four- to ten-year-olds are 9:00 A.M.–3:00 P.M. and 9:00 A.M.–12:30 P.M. for three- to four-year-olds, but all camps offer before and after care available from 8:00–9:00 A.M. and 3:00–5:00 P.M. (or 12:30–5:00 P.M. for three- to four-year-old campers).

6. And yes, you read that right! The DoSeum has camps offered for younger kids, so all of the preschool parents of San Antonio can rejoice! Special programming has been created for three to four-year-old campers who are potty-trained. Parents of preschoolers understand just what great news this is!

7. At Alamo City Moms Blog, we like to think that The DoSeum will feel like a second home to our San Antonio kids for years to come. With so many activities throughout the museum and exhibits that appeal to children of all ages, we plan to spend a lot of time here as our kids grow. By enrolling your children in The DoSeum Summer Camps in summer 2015, yours will be one of the first San Antonio kids to really call this place home.

8. And last but not least, did you know that if you sign up for summer camps before April 17, parents and kids will get a special sneak preview of the museum? Be one of the first in San Antonio to see what the hype is all about and what will be offered at this truly incredible new facility. Summer Camp Open House takes place on May 9 and is open to the public to meet the summer camp staff and ask questions. Those registered before April 17 will receive a museum tour! For more details on the open house, check out their event page here.

Tabbetha Greco with The DoSeum Summer Camps said it best: “Educators at The DoSeum have collaborated with community partners, designed camps in cross-curriculum teams, and kept the entire family in mind when creating camps. We look at the best practices for kids and try to create programs that will continue the same inquiry and questioning at home after the camp day is done. As an educator and a mom, I realize that there are factors when deciding where to send your children. We offer camps and programs that empower children to learn about themselves and the STEM and STEAM curriculum that will help change the way they look at the learning process.”

So what are you waiting for? Camp sign ups are open but filling fast. Be sure to reserve your spot today for The DoSeum Summer Camps!

Did you know that The DoSeum will be offering an early learning program beginning in the fall of 2015? Little Doers is a nine-month program geared toward preschool-aged children and focused on play-based development. Classes will take place one day a week, on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, from 9:00 A.M.–12:00 P.M. Registration takes place this week, April 15–17, at 2800 Broadway.
