Five Tips for Getting Rid of Mosquitoes…Once and for All!

We are thrilled to bring you information about our local advertising partner, Mosquito Squad. I received a complimentary Barrier Treatment for my yard in order to review their services. I’m eager to share my experience with the Alamo City Moms Blog Community.

Summer is here—the sun will not let us forget that. However, in an unusual twist from summers past, this one has seen tremendous rain. We’re enjoying the many benefits: my lawn has never looked better, water restrictions have been lifted, and Medina Lake is back in business.

Yet every summer, rain or shine, an uninvited guest shows up. It comes to steal the joy from our backyard BBQs and devour the little limbs of our children, wreaking havoc on all outdoor activities. You know this little monster all too well. It’s the MOSQUITO! The mere buzz of those flying creatures makes me want to cringe, and don’t even get me started on the deadly diseases they can carry, like the West Nile Virus. Worse yet, these tiny terrors are thriving in all the rain! Despite our efforts to light citronella candles, spray bug repellent, and hang zappers, those determined little insects find a way terrorize.

Moms all over town are dealing with the aftermath of these daily attacks. Itchy, red welts cover our children, stinging their soft skin. If you have kids like mine, they scratch until they bleed; then the wounds scab over, and they scratch again leaving scars. It’s downright maddening.

My options include keeping the kiddos cooped up inside all day, spraying them down with stinky, chemical repellents every time they go outside (which is all day long, people), or fighting back. I choose the latter. But instead of asking me how, it would be better put to ask, “Who ya gonna call?”

The Mosquito Squad are the Ghostbusters of the tiny critter world. They allow residents of our beloved city to reclaim their yards from pesky mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and other no-see-ums.

You can imagine my excitement when this little truck pulled up to my house for a Barrier Treatment. Oh, yeah! Break out into my happy dance!

Their team went straight to work, spraying the perimeter of my lawn, around the bushes, down the side alleyways, and in every nook and cranny in my patio. They finished in about 15 minutes, and they even left a nifty pamphlet on my door that lists five tips for truly creating a mosquito-free yard. You, my friend, are getting the inside scoop on these great tips!

  1. TIP items over in your yard to reduce standing water and eliminate mosquito breeding. Items to check: children’s sandboxes, wagons, plastic toys, plant saucers, and dog bowls. Check underneath and around downspouts, gutters, and flat roofs. Gutters, especially, need regular maintenance, given that they easily collect debris, leaves, and water yet sit high up away from our normal view.
  2. TOSS excess grass, leaves, firewood, and clippings from yards.
  3. TURN over large yard items that can hold water like portable pools, plastic toys, and buckets.
  4. TARPS. Remove tarps stretched over grills, firewood piles, and boats or sports equipment, because if they aren’t taut then they are holding water in their folds and pockets.
  5. TREAT your yard utilizing Mosquito Squad’s Barrier Treatment program, or even consider installing an Automatic Misting System. The barrier method lasts approximately two to three weeks after each treatment, eliminating up to 90% of your mosquitoes. And while their treatment formula is EPA registered and contains the same basic ingredient as household products, they also offer an all-natural treatment made up of essential oils. The oils actually confuse and repel the biting bullies for approximately 14 days, eliminating up to 75% of your mosquitoes. Both treatment formulas are kid- and pet-friendly too.

Yikes! Who knew I was creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes with all the toys my children leave out in the yard? Needless to say, I will be paying a lot more attention to items collecting water by making the rounds outside after it rains.

And now for the results (drum roll, please!)… The kids and I anxiously waited the 30 minutes advised before heading outdoors, and once we did, wow! I was very surprised the yard didn’t smell, and the areas where I normally saw mosquitoes swarming were totally clear. In fact, the kids stayed out the rest of the afternoon and even left the door open—a big no-no in our house. But this time I didn’t see anything flying in. Nope, this was my lovely view all afternoon.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I enjoyed my patio longer than 10 minutes before seeking refuge indoors, away from flying insects. Naturally, the occasion was celebrated with a glass of wine, and my husband even decided to grill that evening so we could fully appreciate the difference. This is a life changer folks—seriously. I can’t believe defeat was accepted so easily before Mosquito Squad. I’m here to tell you: a safe, effective, and affordable method exists to control mosquitoes, giving this mama peace of mind while her loves play outside. Hallelujah!

Some other things you should know: Mosquito Squad’s treatment formula actually lasts much longer than competitors’ yet costs the same, and their state-of-the-art Misting Systems come in an innovative tankless unit or in the traditional drum-top style. Regardless of your choice, rest assured that you are purchasing the most reliable and highest quality product in its class. Their systems are weather-tough, easy to use, and offer important features such as formula agitation to keep the treatment from breaking down, leak detection, wind sensing, and remote control accessibility, should you decide to have a last-minute gathering and want the misters to do their thing while you’re away. They even offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. That means if you still find yourself getting eaten alive after a Barrier Treatment, they’ll come back out to retreat at no charge. Last but not least, a portion of all their sales go back to Malaria No More, a wonderful program dedicated to fighting malaria in Africa.
