Two years ago, when my daughter proclaimed it was time to start taking dance, a part of me panicked. While we had participated in a wide range of activities including music, gymnastics, soccer, and art, I had yet to research dance studios. I grew up taking dance when I was younger, and some of my favorite memories are of my time in the studio with my instructors. I wanted this same experience for my little girl but didn’t want the booty-shaking, “sequin explosion” style that seems to dominate the dance world today. I wanted a program where my daughter could learn the art of dance, the beauty and grace that it embodies, and an appreciation for music that accompanies dance.

As I began researching and talking to other moms I knew for insight on local dance studios, I kept hearing rave reviews about the Ballet Conservatory of South Texas. I liked that they were a pre-professional Ballet Academy and Dance company. But what I loved most about the Ballet Conservatory of South Texas, and what ultimately made up my mind that this was the right studio for our family, is that they are a nonprofit, and I was drawn to the work they do with underserved children. The Ballet Conservatory of South Texas both teaches ballet and presents free performances to children who might not otherwise be exposed to dance.

The Ballet Conservatory of South Texas has a long history in San Antonio and celebrates it’s tenth anniversary this year. This is remarkable for a nonprofit, given the cutbacks in arts funding and in corporate sponsorships. Its success certainly comes from its model of rigorous but accessible training that prepares students for real life. BCSTX students have gone on to win scholarships and training opportunities with the Paris Opera Ballet, Houston Ballet, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and School of American Ballet. Some graduates are pursuing dance degrees at colleges like University of Utah, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and Southern Methodist University.ballet

We’ve just started our second year at the Ballet Conservatory of South Texas, and my daughter has been looking forward to classes all summer long. Ballet is certainly a highlight of her week! One of her favorite parts of class is interacting with the older students who often come in to assist in teaching the younger children. If you are searching for a dance class for your daughter or son, I encourage you to look into the Ballet Conservatory of South Texas, not only for the dance education they will provide your children but also for the history they have in San Antonio and the inspiring work they do with underserved children.ballet2
