The Children’s Nutcracker: A New San Antonio Tradition

We are pleased to partner with The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio to bring information about The Children’s Nutcracker performance to our readers.

I have vivid memories of picking out the perfect dress, the winter air turning crisp and settling in, and heading to our local theater for the annual performance of The Nutcracker. We would arrive at the theater, the excitement of both Christmas and the performance filling the air. When the bells would ring through the lobby, my mom would take my hand as we made our way in and found our seats. The lights would lower, the curtain would rise, and…magic.

I can clearly recall the moments when I would spot friends in the performance because it was put on by our local school of ballet. Seeing them transformed on the stage into mice, snowflakes, rosebuds, and Russian dancers was delightful! And though I never personally knew who she was, each and every year the Sugar Plum Fairy (my favorite, of course!) would take my breath away. She was filled with elegance as she graced the stage, each movement so flawless, each step so delicate.

I am thrilled that this year The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio (CBSA) will unveil its debut performance of The Children’s Nutcracker at the Scottish Rite Theatre. This first Nutcracker performance in San Antonio this year, taking place at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 19 and Friday, November 20, will officially usher in the holidays to San Antonio.

Much like the performances of my youth, The Children’s Nutcracker features youth dancers from our very own community! All San Antonio ballet students will be invited to audition each year and will be directed by renowned principal dancer Vanessa Bessler.

The mission of The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio is to inspire the pursuit of excellence and prepare children for productive and creative lives through dance by offering extensive training and performance opportunities for talented children from all backgrounds. The CBSA, a not-for-profit organization, targets a children’s audience to inspire, motivate, and nurture a love and appreciation for ballet and the performing arts that children and their families will carry with them throughout their entire lives.

What makes the CBSA’s performance so unique is that most current youth ballet and children’s companies in America function as a marketing tool to promote pre-professional academies, but the performances are limited to recitals and no additional production value is added. The Children’s Nutcracker promises to be a magical, top-tier performance open to the San Antonio community to enjoy!

Don’t miss this premier event! Tickets can be purchased here.
