Going with the Flow in the Alamo City: A Guide to San Antonio Yoga Studios

image

Whether you are a dedicated yogi or a yoga-curious newbie, San Antonio has a myriad of different studios all across town. Despite our rapidly emerging culinary scene, our city may have been a bit slower to embrace the yoga scene than our neighboring Austin, but lately we are making up for lost time. New studios are opening, current studios keep expanding their class offerings, and many traditional gyms and fitness centers are adding yoga classes to their group fitness class offerings.

Allow me a bit of a platform to put on my yoga teacher hat and preach: if you are new to yoga or have had a less than stellar yoga experience, please try more than one studio and more than one teacher. There are many styles of yoga, even more yoga studio/class cultures and environments, and yet even more teaching styles. I often have people tell me, “I tried yoga once and didn’t like it. I’ve never been back.” To me, that is like saying, “I went to a restaurant once and didn’t like it. I’ve eaten at home ever since.” There is a yoga class for you out there. Whether you want a peaceful stretch, an intense leave-you-sore-for-days workout, a yoga practice that compliments your sport of choice, a meditative and spiritual experience, or are looking to heal from an injury or chronic pain, there is a class for you. Allow yourself some time to find it. If you attend a class and find it not to your liking, please talk to the instructor. We are often able to guide you to different classes or instructors and sometimes different studios if we know what needs you are looking to yoga to meet. {steps off soapbox}

Here are some great San Antonio Yoga Studios, grouped (roughly) by location:

Downtown

Southtown Yoga Loft—Winner of 2015 SA Current Best of SA award. Wide range of classes, including prenatal and kids yoga.

The Synergy Studio—Also offers dance and several creative movement classes.

Two Hearts Yoga Studio—In the Olmos Park area and has a wide range of yoga styles.

Mobile Om—A great way to do yoga AND get out in San Antonio. Classes are offered at several unique spots around downtown (like the SSA chapel and at a few different breweries). Often adding new locations.

Far North San Antonio/Boerne

InBalance—Off I-10, near The Dominion. Also offers Pilates, Booty Barre, and fusion-style classes.

MindBody—Attached to Leon Springs Crossfit, this studio is one of the first in the Boerne area.

The Yoga House – In Boerne.  Offers a beginner friendly atmosphere.

Aerial Yoga Boerne – Offers aerial yoga classes (yoga with the support of a fabric hammock), as well as traditional classes.

Even with this pretty comprehensive list, we may be leaving out some great studios. Please leave a comment below if you have a favorite yoga studio or instructor that you would like to highlight.

Namaste, y’all!

Michelle moved to San Antonio eight years ago and yet still feels like a newcomer. She is rather smitten with the Alamo City. She and her husband met at Texas A&M and started their marriage in Minnesota. After six years of very cold winters, they returned to Texas. Michelle has two kids (12 and 9), along with a very quirky rescue dog and two rather cute guinea pigs. A former corporate food scientist turned part-time yoga instructor, she still takes her food very seriously—she just doesn’t get paid for it anymore. She is fueled by tea, cold brew coffee, yoga, dog walking, books and quickly googling answers to her kids eleventy million questions.

  1. Left off 2 other studios in Boerne that have both been around longer than Mind Body: Aerial Yoga Boerne & The Yoga House.

The Yoga House is my absolute favorite place to do yoga.

    • Thanks Janeen! I just edited the post to add those 2 studios. I’m glad you’ve found your yoga home!
