Knock-Your-Socks-Off Birthday Parties at The Witte Museum

Alamo City Moms Blog is proud to partner with The Witte Museum and highlight all of the resources they provide for San Antonio—from the new Mays Family Center for special exhibitions and events, to the high-quality exhibits and as one of our favorite places to host birthday parties! The Witte invited us to experience a NEW Witte birthday party, and we’re happy to share our experience with you today.

It’s OK if you don’t, but I have a tendency to overthink and (maybe just a little) over-plan birthday parties in my house. Husband’s 40th (which is five years away)? Got a theme. So it will come as no surprise to you that Vivi’s first five birthdays had been planned for, well, a while. This birthday was different, though. Her first “class is invited” party, the first one she had lots of input on and was really excited about, and the first one we hosted outside of our backyard. Big, huge step for me! The Witte’s new birthday party themes totally sold me on a not-at-home (my comfort zone!) birthday, and I’m so pleased with how it came together.

Along with the new spaces and exhibits it debuted this spring, The Witte revamped and put the “wow!” factor into the birthday party themes it’s offering, including: Texas Time Travelers, Party Animals, Mad Scientist, Ancient Artists, Survival of the Fittest, an all new Witte Mini Chef’s Experience, Fiesta Fairytales, and Dino Excavation Celebration.

With our “Cinco de Vivi” theme already set, it was a no-brainer to choose the “Fiesta Fairytales” party. The built-in themed activity, costumed party host (a Fiesta Princess—or a Fiesta King, if you prefer), suggested timeline, and coordinating exhibit at the museum left me to overthink the decor and snacks (my favorite parts to overthink!).

Our guests were welcomed into the H-E-B Body Adventure Demonstration Kitchen by our Fiesta Fairytale hostess, who guided us through the party and kept us on schedule.

Science experiments, snack making, and tissue paper flower making—each party theme has a coordinated activity built into the party time. We made fluffy tissue paper flowers, guided step by step with age-appropriate instructions. Our flower has been absorbed into our regular Fiesta decorations, and it’s a fun reminder of Vivi’s party.

After flower making, the kiddos gathered for a story, which gave me a moment to regroup and get ready for cake and snacks.

After singing and cake, a rousing game of “Pin the Tail on the Pinata” ensued, and then we moved to The Witte exhibits. Depending on the theme you choose, an exhibit may be available that coincides perfectly with your party, like the Natural Beauty: Fiesta of Land, Water and Sky featuring Order of the Alamo coronation gowns and robes or the amazing dinos in the Naylor Family Dinosaur Gallery.

One of the best parts of the party is that admission is included for your guests, which means that all party guests can enjoy the rest of the regular Witte exhibits after the party concludes. Send them off with their goodie bags (part of the party package) or join them and then return to collect your things and go.

We can’t wait to attend many more Witte birthday parties—and if you want something new, out of the box, and easy for your next kid’s birthday, we can’t recommend a Witte party more!
